Internet of Things for Healthcare

Description

Recent advances in technology of sensors, wireless communi-cation have en-abled the design of compact, ultra-low power, low-cost embedded devices which can be interconnected as the key components of Internet of Things (IoT).IoT is covering an ever-increasing range of applications including automo-tive, smart buildings and, of particular interest, applications for healthcare.
Wearable healthcare monitoring systems are needed to monitor elderly people or patients’ health status while they are out of the hospital doing their daily ac-tivities. Wearable devices are also very popular and useful for sports, fitness and wellness to measure daily activity, sleep patterns, and other parameters related to wellbeing.
Wearable medical devices sense and process the vital signals of the person (e.g. ECG, EEG, EMG) anywhere and anytime for as long as it is needed, and transmit the result/data to the server via SmartPhone or directly via WiFi link.
Since the devices are battery-operated, they need to be ultra-low power. Re-cent research efforts focus on power reduction of different components includ-ing embedded processor, memory, and wireless module by intruding different techniques such as compressing data, approximating the computation, adap-tive sampling rate, etc..

Shortdescription

In this seminar our main focus is to study different challenges in wearable, healthcare monitoring systems at different abstraction layers (system level, ar-chitecture level, circuit design level).
