Short Bio

Mr. Muhammad Usman Karim Khan is currently serving as a research assistant in the „Chair for Embedded Systems“ (CES), under the supervision of Prof. Joerg Henkel in Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

The research focus of Mr. Usman is embedded multimedia systems, targeting low energy and high efficiency architectures and algorithms. He was also a part of a collaborative research project with the industry to design a video encoding/compression system for video data logging in cars, under the supervision of Mr. Shafique and Mr. Bauer. The development of the video encoding system was H.264/AVC based and carried on a mid-range FPGA.

Mr. Usman has completed his Bachelors and Masters in Electrical Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar and Center for Advanced Studies in Engineering (CASE) Islamabad, Pakistan, by securing top grades. He has also been awarded the prestigious Erasmus Mundus MERIT scholarship (European Master of Research on Information and Communication Technologies) owing to his exceptional education track-record. Under this program, Mr. Usman had to complete his masters in 2 esteemed European universities, from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) (2009-2010) and Politecnico di Torino (PdT) (2010-2011). Thus, Mr. Usman has double masters in Electrical Engineering and has studied in 4 different institutes and 3 different countries to achieve this.

For his excellent academic performances, he has been awarded numerous awards from Government of Pakistan and his educational institutes. He has been given a gold medal from UET Peshawar for his academic performance in BSC. After securing 3rd position in Pre-Engineering studies (both in 12th and 10th grade) in the state, his efforts were acknowledged by the Governor and his own institute. For this, he was awarded medals and granted scholarships throughout his educational career.

Mr. Usman has also served as a lecturer and lab-engineer in UET Peshawar where he has taken labs in Digital Signal/Image Processing and logic design. He also worked in conjunction with his Professors in conducting various seminars and students’ Bachelor projects.

Mr. Usman has good research and development experience in audio/image processing, wireless networks and communications (OFDM), video compression (H.265/HEVC, H.264/AVC, Distributed Video Coding) and computer architectures. His interest lies in efficient algorithmic implementations and designing hardware architectures for complex computational problems (like video coding systems). Mr. Usman has also served as an external reviewer for major conferences in embedded systems and automation.
