Multicore for Multimedia Processors

Multicore processors are very likely solutions for the future mobile computing platforms and offers diverse advantages and probably the only solution to keep with the pace predicted by Moore`s law. Billion transistors and hundreds of cores on a single chip promises to deliver computing power never seen before under envelop of low energy consumption.

Multimedia processing has become necessary requirement for all mobile platforms which poses big challenge to meet the computational throughput under low energy budget. Multicore seems to be the ideal solution for multimedia processing and has the capacity to satisfy the heterogeneous needs of future systems but it also poses new problems. Moreover, Multicore processors provide an excellent platform for both instruction-level parallelism (ILP) and thread level parallelism (TLP).

To overcome associated hurdles and problems unprecedented level of research is in progress especially in the area of processor architecture and design methodologies with sophisticated on-chip communication schemes, programming models, system-level management approaches, and the supporting run-time schemes for next-generation embedded multimedia processing.
